The importance of winning the Europa League for Man United

Despite conceding a last minute equalizer in last night’s first leg tie, United will be happy to take a draw back to Old Trafford for the reverse tie against Lyon next Thursday.

Although it was a fairly even contest most United fans will be thinking they should have had a 2 goal cushion going into the 2nd leg if not for two glaring mistakes by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

It’s been a poor season overall for the Cameroonian with fans becoming increasingly frustrated with his below par performances and poor distribution.

Amorim might have hoped to stick with Onana through at least one more transfer window, however, he may now be required to act this summer and look for safer hands in between the posts.

Uniteds main target is likely to be a striker with both Hojlund and Zirkzee failing to hit the scoring numbers expected of a United number 9. Oshimen, Gykores and Delap all rumored to be on Uniteds shortlist with the latter having a release clause of just 30 million, but with a buyback clause giving Man City first refusal.

If Amorim is to be successful at United he will need to bring in players that suit his style of play. Along with a striker, he may look for a right sided wing back to compliment Dorgu on the left who Amorim signed in January and has so far done well. If he now feels like a replacement for Onana is needed things could get very expensive for Manchester United this summer.

It is well known that United need a massive clear out, both to reduce wages and generate income to re-invest. The biggest factor in all of this for me is United winning the Europa League.

If United win the Europa League it will be a trophy in Amorims first season but more importantly it’s qualification for next year’s champions league. The finances generated from being in European Elite competition and the draw for any potential transfer targets could be the catalyst for success under Amorim.

Failure to win the Europa League and finish outside of the top 10 in the premier league makes United a much harder sell, and would leave them with a much smaller purse to operate from.

You are right, the Europa League is the big issue for United. Winning it and everything that comes with that is huge for Uniteds plans for next season.

What needs to happen though, in thebworst case scenario for United in not winning it, is to comtinue to back the manager.

It certainly wont be his failure.

Right wing back could be a difficult position to fill next season with the likelihood of Liverpool being in the market there too.

As for the tie itself last night, it looks bad after losing the lead late, but before the game United fans might have taken the offer of a draw. Plus two keeping howlers let Lyon in so I’d still back United in the second leg.
