Ireland take on Bulgaria at the Aviva Stadium this evening, carrying a narrow one-goal advantage into the game after Hallgrimsson’s side came from behind on Thursday to secure a 2-1 away win. With home advantage, Ireland will be confident of getting the job done and securing their status as a Tier B side in the Nations League.
While opinions may vary on the significance of Nations League games, it was clear midweek that the Ireland manager sees this as an important fixture. He emphasised the importance of staying in Group B and competing against stronger opposition, stating: “As a group, we want to stay in Group B and compete with better teams.”
That’s a fair stance, and I agree with it. Some have suggested that dropping to Group C might allow Ireland to win more games, and I even joked about that myself. But realistically, the team needs to maintain a higher standard wherever possible.
The squad remains unchanged for tonight’s game, and I expect the starting line-up to be similar to Thursday’s.
I suspect Ireland will do enough to retain their place in Group B this evening. I’ll be posting a thread in the Community Hub for anyone who wants to chat before, during, and after the game.
The game is due to kick off at 7:45 pm at the Aviva Stadium. It will be shown live on RTÉ 2 and can be streamed on the RTÉ Player.
Cheers!
